The Center for Sustainability at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) is pleased to partner with the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, Inc., to bring Alexandra Cousteau and her International Expedition Blue Planet Team to the Queen City for a special watershed action day event.
Ms. Cousteau and her film team will visit CPCC’s Central Campus as part of their cross-continent film and social media project with nationalgeographic.com.
CPCC will host two separate events that will give local residents, CPCC students and environmental enthusiasts the opportunity to meet Ms. Cousteau and her team and learn more about the world’s water use and water systems.

Spend an evening at Poplar Ridge Farm! We host 6-8 yearly, elegant Farm to Table Dinners with area chefs and guest speakers. We will meet, greet, eat, and learn. The dinner events are held from 6:15 pm - 9:00 pm, for up to 50 attendees in our farm pavilion and outdoor dining area. Each dinner will feature a wonderful dining experience with seasonal vegetables from the farm!

A FOUR COURSE SIT DOWN DINNER AND COOKING DEMONSTRATION
We begin with the food! A Charlotte area chef selected because of their passion and commitment to using local farm fresh food will prepare our meal and demonstrate technique and recipes using Poplar Ridge Farm produce from that week’s harvest. There will be a wine tasting with each course.
A GUEST SPEAKER
We invite speakers to address various topics related to the environment and health. At each dinner our speaker shares a power point presentation for us for 30 minutes. Topics may include sustainable agriculture, conservation, nutrition, global and local food policy, farming, gardening, and more. Poplar Ridge Farm draws from professional and not for profit organizations in our community to bring you these featured speakers. This year Know Your Farms will host its second annual Family Farm Tour. This year we have expanded the event to two days, Saturday September 18th and Sunday September 19th. The tour invites the citizens of Charlotte and its surrounding communities to step beyond the farmer’s market and their dinner tables and head to the farms.
Know Your Farms, a family-owned and operated business, is based in Davidson, NC. The tour aims to reacquaint and educate people about the foods that are grown and cared for right here in the Charlotte Metro area. Guests of the tour will meet local farmers and learn more about where their food comes from. This is an educational and fun event that raises awareness and facilitates community access to good, safe, healthy, delicious food. |

Rain Garden Certification Workshop- Asheville, NC
About the workshop: As homeowners and property managers become more aware of the issues of stormwater management many of them are choosing to manage the runoff from their homes and businesses with rain gardens. Rain gardens are shallow depression landscape features that can effectively collect and treat stormwater and reduce localized flooding. Rain gardens can be integrated into the existing landscape as a retrofit or be included in the initial landscaping plan.
To effectively manage stormwater, rain gardens must be accurately sized and properly constructed. This workshop will present a simple method for sizing and designing rain gardens and detail proper construction techniques. As a result of this training you will:
• Understand why stormwater needs to be managed,
• Understand the principles of rain garden location, design, construction and maintenance,
• Be able to select appropriate vegetation,
• Tour several local rain gardens, and
• Be eligible to take a test at the conclusion of the training to be certified in rain garden design and construction
